-The Song-

D G
The screen door slams
       D
Mary's dress waves
                         A
Like a vision she dances across the porch
       G
As the radio plays
                            A
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
           D G
Hey that's me and I want you only

Don't turn me home again
  D A
I just can't face myself alone again
      D
Don't run back inside
        G D
darling you know just what I'm here for

So you're scared and you're thinking
     A G
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
                               		  A
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
	    D G
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
       D A
Oh and that's alright with me

D
You can hide 'neath your covers
    A
And study your pain
     D
Make crosses from your lovers
G
Throw roses in the rain
D A
Waste your summer praying in vain
      G A
For a savior to rise from these streets
	 D
Well now I'm no hero
       Bm
That's understood
	 D
All the redemption I can offer, girl
   G
Is beneath this dirty hood
D A
With a chance to make it good somehow
    G A
Hey what else can we do now
       D
Except roll down the window
    G D
And let the wind blow back your hair

Well the night's busting open
      A G
These two lanes will take us anywhere
                                  A
We got one last chance to make it real
   D G
To trade in these wings on some wheels
	 D
Climb in back
			     A
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks

D Bm
Oh oh come take my hand
G D
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
   A G
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
A
oh Thunder Road
D B m
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
    D G D
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
  A G A
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
        D
Thunder Road

G
Well I got this guitar
      A D
And I learned how to make it talk
       Bm
And my car's out back
			     G A
If you're ready to take that long walk
	  G A
From your front porch to my front seat
           F Sharp Minor Bm
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
    G
And I know you're lonely

For words that I ain't spoken
    A
But tonight we'll be free

All the promises'll be broken
           D
There were ghosts in the eyes
   G D
Of all the boys you sent away

They haunt this dusty beach road
       A G
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
     A
They scream your name at night in the street
		D G
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
           Bm
And in the lonely cool before dawn
               G
You hear their engines roaring on
	     Em A
But when you get to the porch they're gone
       G Em
On the wind, so Mary climb in
       G
It's a town full of losers
        A D
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

-Outro-

D (1 and a half seconds) G (half a second / a strum) A (for 2 seconds)

About the artist behind Thunder Road Chords:

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949) is an American songwriter, singer and guitarist. He has recorded and toured with the E Street Band. Springsteen is widely known for his brand of heartland rock infused with pop hooks, poetic lyrics, and Americana sentiments centered around his native New Jersey. His eloquence in expressing ordinary, everyday problems has earned him numerous awards, including eighteen Grammy Awards and an Academy Award, along with a notoriously dedicated and devoted global fan base. His most famous albums, Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A., epitomize his penchant for finding grandeur in the struggles of daily life. He has sold over 65 million albums in the U.S.[1]

Springsteen's lyrics often concern men and women struggling to make ends meet. He has gradually become identified with progressive politics. Springsteen is also noted for his support of various relief and rebuilding efforts in New Jersey and elsewhere, and for his response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, on which his album The Rising reflects.

Springsteen's recordings have tended to alternate between commercially accessible rock albums and somber folk-oriented works. Much of his iconic status stems from the concerts and marathon shows in which he and the E Street Band present intense ballads, rousing anthems, and party rock and roll songs, amongst which Springsteen intersperses long, whimsical or deeply emotional stories.

Springsteen has long had the nickname "The Boss", a term which he was initially reported to hate but now seems to have come to terms with, as he sometimes jokingly refers to himself as such on stage. The nickname originated when a young Springsteen, playing club gigs with a band in the 1960s, took on the task of collecting the band's nightly pay and distributing it amongst his bandmates.[2]
